EFIP members meet in Mantova to visit the port Valdaro and learn about the HyMantoValley Project

On Thursday, 10 October, EFIP hosted a seminar on "Creation of the Hydrogen Valley in Mantua" during its Annual Executive Committee Meeting. Organized with the Hymantovalley Project, the Province of Mantova, and AGIRE, the event showcased the EU co-financed Hymantovalley project and its focus on renewable hydrogen for logistics to cut transport emissions.

Speakers included Sapio (green hydrogen production), Veneziana Navigazione e Rimorchio (converting a diesel ship to hydrogen), and IPE Locomotori 2000 (planning a hydrogen-powered locomotive).

Representatives from EFIP member ports, industry experts, institutions, and research bodies participated. The Hymantovalley project is set to be completed by the end of 2026, positioning the Inland Port of Mantova as a sustainable, intermodal logistics hub with a fully developed renewable hydrogen supply chain.

Furthermore, on 11 October 2024, EFIP members gathered in Mantova for their annual Executive Committee Meeting, hosted by the Port of Mantova. The focus of the event continued to be “Port Development”, putting the Port of Mantova at the center of the discussion through the Hymantovalley project.

During the open session, Nicola Galli, director of AGIRE, made a presentation on the transformation of a hydrogen tugboat and CEO ALOT, Guido Piccoli presented the intangible actions for the logistic development of inland ports.

The Executive Committee members then to visited the Port Valdaro.

President of the Province of Mantova, Carlo Bottani stated: “The Province of Mantova wants to become one of Europe’s first hydrogen valleys with our port at its heart. We hope it will be an inspiration for all inland ports.” 

Antoine Berbain, President of EFIP, added: “Inland ports have been exploring their role in the energy transition across Europe. Hydrogen, in its many forms, is a part of this. This is why in 2022 EFIP held a series of workshops on this topic. It is great to see the port of Mantova taking the next steps into our energy future."

The discussion covered various policy developments such as the Transport Block Exemption, Combined Transport Directive, River Information Services (RIS) and CEF 2024 Call. Moreover, a forthcoming workshop, entitled “Green Ports Study” will take place on November 7th at the Port of Brussels.

Finally, an Extra-Ordinary GA took place, to vote Mr. Gert Van der Eeken as new Vice President at EFIP, succeeding Sven Devroe, representing the Port of Brussels.
